I don’t know about you, but I have always enjoyed the “Planet Earth” series. “Sir David Attenborough, British biologist, natural historian, and narrator of the beloved television series “Planet Earth,” among many other things, spoke about the state of the planet.” This is what he said:
“Please make no mistake. Climate change is the biggest threat to global security that modern humans have ever faced,” and “there is no time to wait.” Sir Attenborough explains that because of increased warming, “[o]ur atmosphere now contains concentrations of carbon dioxide that have not been equaled for millions of years.”“If we continue on our current path,” he warns, “[w]e will face the collapse of everything that gives us our security. Food production, access to fresh water, habitable ambient temperatures, and ocean food chains, and if the natural world can no longer support the most basic of our needs, then much of the rest of civilization will quickly break down.”
Studies have shown that many important aquatic food producers all over the world are extremely susceptible to changes in the environment which have been caused by humans. Human industry warming the atmosphere of our planet also warms the oceans, killing marine animals and adversely affecting marine wildlife and coral reefs. In addition, “more than 90% of global “blue” food production, including capture fisheries and aquaculture, is exposed to significant risks arising from environmental change. Worldwide industrial fishing also kills hundreds of thousands of whales, sea turtles, and dolphins each year. Experts in this area caution that we must urgently address improving adaptation strategies for our blue food systems rapidly changing in the face of climate change. Climate change and global warming are not merely a matter of sea level rise, stronger and more frequent storms, floods, fires, and droughts, and changing weather and climate patterns. These environmental threats will directly impact our land and marine food systems, and the availability of potable water. Climate change is not an inconvenience – it is a threat to our survival. Sir David Attenborough has been around the world many times over and has dedicated most of his life to the environment. We should all listen to him.
